Biological information processing systems ('wetware') are superior to artificial systems in various aspects. How is information processed in such systems? What are the foundations of human intelligence? In this course the most important information processing models in nervous systems of biological organisms are presented. In the practicals the discussed quantitative models are analyzed with Matlab or simulation environments like NEURON and individual experiments are carried out.

The presented topics include:

  • Introduction to the anatomy/physiology of the brain
  • Computing units of the brain: neurons and synapses
  • Models for neural circuits on various levels of abstraction
  • Detailed single-neuron models
  • Plasticity of neural circuits
  • Learning and memory in biological organisms
  • Organisation of computation in the nervous system
