Core course of the "Computational Intelligence" Catalog

Note: Since Machine Learning A is not offered in WS 2006/07, students can instead attend Machine Learning B as a core course.

This course concentrates on algorithms for pattern classification and data mining. Pattern recognition deals with the problem of designing computer programs that are capable e.g. of recognizing hand-written digits, evaluating positions on a chess board, or interpreting measurements to diagnose whether a person is ill or not. Data mining is a variant of pattern recognition that has its focus on autonomously recognizing patterns within huge databases.

The presented topics include:

  • Boosting
  • Clustering and the EM-Algorithm
  • Bayesian learning
  • Graphical models / Bayesian networks
  • Kernel methods and support vector machines
